What Is AICAR?

AICAR is a synthetic research compound known for activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)—a major enzyme involved in managing and regulating the body’s cellular energy balance. Because AMPK plays such a central role in metabolism, AICAR is widely studied for its potential effects on endurance, insulin sensitivity, and cellular protection during low-oxygen or ischemic conditions.

Although AICAR is sometimes referred to as a “peptide,” it is not a peptide. The term is commonly used in the research community, but technically inaccurate. AICAR is a standalone compound frequently used in laboratory settings to explore metabolic and energy-related pathways.
